The G&L L-1500 is characterized by robust construction and innovative hardware: 

• Pickups: A single, powerful G&L Magnetic Field Design (MFD) humbucker pickup in the bridge position. This pickup allows for individual volume balance through adjustable pole pieces.
• Electronics: The flexible Tri-Tone system includes controls for Volume, Treble, and Bass, as well as two mini-toggle switches. One switch selects between series and parallel operation of the pickup, the other switches between active and passive.
• Body and Neck: The body is typically made of alder or swamp ash, with a bolt-on maple neck. The neck often features a modern medium "C" profile with a 12" radius and 21 medium-jumbo frets.
• Hardware: Equipped with the G&L Saddle-Lock bridge, which more efficiently transfers string energy to the body, and G&L Ultra-Lite tuners. 

• Aggressive Tone: The bass is often described as more aggressive and having more "grit" than a Music Man StingRay, yet it can effortlessly cut through the mix.
• Sound Spectrum: Despite the single pickup, the L-1500 can produce a wide range of sounds. In passive series mode with the treble control reduced, it can deliver a warm, fat, vintage tone, similar to a P-Bass. In active parallel mode with the EQ fully engaged, it provides a strong, assertive tone.
