Recorded on the tour in support of Off The Ground, Paul Is Live was Paul’s fifth live album, and is notable for the double meaning of its title and its rumour-fuelled cover artwork.
Since the 1969 release of Abbey Road, there had been conspiracy theories of Paul’s death being covered up, and the new title was a way of communicating that this was certainly not the case. The album cover sees Paul crossing the same road as the famous Abbey Road cover, but this time wearing shoes and holding his cigarette in his left hand. On the Abbey Road cover his feet were bare and, as a left-hander, he held his cigarette in his right hand, which the theories suggested was a clue that it could not be the real Paul.
As well as a host of solo, Wings and Beatles hits, the album also offers a look into the band’s sound checks, with the final three songs all improvised during rehearsals at various locations on the tour.
