Description

"Horrorful Heights" marks an impressive new chapter in The Bevis Frond's extensive body of work, showcasing the enduring creativity of songwriter, guitarist, and frontman Nick Saloman, who embarks on another decade as a musician in 2026. Long established as one of the most distinctive voices in British underground rock, Saloman continues to refine the band's blend of melodic psychedelia, wiry guitar epics, and songwriting artistry. It's one of the most accessible entry points into The Bevis Frond's world, unifying all their strengths into a cohesive, vibrant whole.

The album fluidly moves between jangling psych-pop, heavy guitar riffs, and pastoral dreamscapes. The album's breadth is vast yet clearly defined. "Draining The Bad Blood" harks back to the classic Bevis Frond style of melodically inspired 60s guitar pop, while "Space Age Eyes," a concise nine-minute odyssey, references the transcendental explorations of 70s electric Miles Davis. The sitar-laden title track drifts through smoky psychedelia with multi-tracked vocals and layered tablas—a loving echo of the headshop mysticism Saloman has played with throughout the band's history. Elsewhere, "Mossback's Dream" fuses lysergic leads with the driving energy of 80s American hardcore, creating a hybrid that feels both timeless and entirely unique. Other highlights include the Byrds-influenced "Buffaloed," the swirling "Silver Insects," and "That's Your Lot," a fast-paced fireworks display of melancholic euphoria and one of the album's most immediate songs.

Though seemingly eclectic, it's a focused portrait of The Bevis Frond in 2025—vital, melodic, and free from nostalgia. Saloman describes the collection simply: the best songs he's written in recent years, created without coercion and entirely instinctively. The result is a late-period pinnacle from one of Britain's most quietly influential underground bands.
